NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes FARS as one zip of CSV tables per year at nhtsa.gov (files served from static.nhtsa.gov). This site uses the accident table for 1975–2024 and the vehicle and person tables for 2015–2024. As a work of the United States government the data is in the public domain. Fields used: state, county, month, hour, day of week, route type and trafficway identifier, milepoint, functional class, rural/urban, light and weather conditions, number killed, driver drinking and speeding flags, person type, body type, injury severity and restraint use. No name, date-and-coordinate pair, case number or other identifying field is published.

County resident population totals from www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/: the 2000–2010 intercensal county file, the 2010–2020 county totals file and the current 2020-onward county totals file. Public domain. Used only as denominators for rates per 100,000 residents.

Coverage

Data through 31 Dec 2024; the latest FARS year is 2024. The site is rebuilt when NHTSA releases or revises a year.
